WILLOWS, Glenn County — October 27, 2026. What will future generations know about everyday life in Willows in 2026? The city has invited residents, students, families and local businesses to contribute to a community time capsule celebrating its 140th anniversary. The capsule is intended to be buried in 2026 and opened in 2076, during the 300th anniversary year of the United States.
What residents can contribute
The municipality’s May 8 announcement offers examples that capture ordinary local life rather than just headline events: letters to future residents, children’s drawings, poems, short stories, printed photographs, school memorabilia, event programs, postcards, newspaper clippings and small keepsakes. Local businesses may offer a menu or business card. The city asks for small, nonperishable items.
A time capsule does not need to contain valuable objects to become useful local history. A description of a family tradition, a printed photo of a familiar building, or a student’s thoughts about life in Glenn County may be more meaningful to readers fifty years from now.
What is—and is not—confirmed
The announcement states the planned burial year and reopening year but does not specify a universal submission deadline, a confirmed burial ceremony date, exact volume limits or a list of already accepted items. Contributors should therefore contact the city before preparing or delivering materials. Fragile objects, food and items with privacy implications may not be suitable without advance review.
Why 2076 matters
The United States will observe the 300th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence in 2076. Willows is using that future milestone as an opportunity to preserve local voices from the present. The municipality’s 140th-anniversary project also offers a way to involve younger residents in city history without requiring specialized historical research.
How to reach the city
For ideas, contributions and instructions, the city directs residents to Karleen Price at kprice@cityofwillows.org or 530-934-7041, extension 102. City Hall is at 201 North Lassen Street, Willows. Confirm delivery arrangements before visiting.
